The following contains spoilers for Anyway I’m Falling In Love With You Season 2, Episodes 6 and 7, currently streaming on Crunchyroll this Winter 2026 anime season

I didn’t entirely miss the last two episodes of Anyway I’m Falling In Love With You. I was thinking a lot, waiting to see what was going to happen across after the confrontation on the bridge. Here, I’ll take a look at the previous two episodes in one fell swoop. Because even though we finally got some answers we’ve been waiting for, Shugo throwing a wrench into things brings up an important question. Why is Mizuho so special to every boy in this friend group?

Shojo anime can be complicated. After all, it often explores love, the most twisted curse of all. (Yes, Gojo lives rent free in my brain.) A woman having her pick of strong choices isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That being said, Anyway I’m Falling In Love With You sets a lot of people up for heartbreak.  And the way things are shaping up, the biggest heartbreaker of all may be the one who actually wins Mizuho’s heart in the end.

It’s easy to pin Mizuho’s overwhelming popularity on her being a Mary Sue character. She doesn’t seem extraordinary in any way, and certainly not enough to have an entire gang of boys falling madly in love with her. But that isn’t entirely true. She is extraordinary, even if only their eyes, and there’s a reason for it.

Peeling away the blinders for a moment, there is one thing about her that all four of the boys find appealing. Mizuho is the first female relationship in their lives who isn’t a relative. Since childhood, they understand they an be themselves with her, and she accepts them. That makes them comfortable.

Romantic relationships can be so awkward and complicated for teenagers. As feelings stir, they often land first in a place of comfort and familiarity. When I look at it that way, it makes perfect sense that all of these boys are infatuated with her.

Anyway I’m Falling In Love With You‘s male infatuations make sense. There is no doubt it is painful for Shin and Shugo both. The saddest part is that once Mizuho realized her feelings for Kizuki, it was over for anyone else. By continuing to hold onto the possibility, Shin and Shugo set themselves up for suffering. Relying on maybe one day Kizuki and Mizuho will break up, isn’t a game plan. It’s heartbreak waiting to happen while brewing a ton of resentment.

Three years after the breakup, both pull their feelings out again, ready to make their move. Disregarding the fact that Mizuho already made her choice, how uncomfortable would it be for everyone involved if she picked one of the others. Never mind that it would permanently shatter any remnants of friendship left between them as adults. It’s also a really shifty thing to do, especially on Shugo’s part. He never once made his feelings or his intent clear to Mizuho.

Then, he had the audacity to throw it back at her. Reminding her of all the times he was there for her when no one else was is just selfish. Suddenly, these big feelings Shugo has for her feel conditional. Like he’s silently screaming inside, “HOW COULD SHE NOT KNOW?” The whole thing makes me so sad.

Season 2, Episode 6, “I’ve Liked You This Whole Time,” introduced us to a new character who works with Shin. Kuroda is another doctor at the hospital, who just so happened to attend college with Shin. During that time, the two became close friends, and Kuroda even developed feelings for her. He got along well with her until Mizuho entered the picture, causing him to lash out at Kuroda in his pain at feeling like Mizuho was using him.

He apologizes later, but it doesn’t change the fact that all he sees is Mizuho. She is all he cares about, to the detriment of others around him. He’s holding on to nothing more than hopes and dreams, and every time they crash down around him, it’s devastating.

Shugo attacking Kizuki and landing them both at the hospital for treatment is all that needs to be said on that front. He physically attacked one of his best friends out of jealousy. Shugo could have accidentally killed himself or Kizuki during the process, and then what? Mizuho hurts even more than she already does, and she blames herself for it.

When I say it hurts, I mean me. It hurts me. Emotionally. My own coming around to Kizuki and Mizuho has been gradual, as you’ve probably witnessed across my season 2 ramblings. I was really dedicated to Shin and Mizuho in my heart, then Koruda happened. That little side exploration of Shin in college changed something in my perspective, and I’m glad.

Now I can hop on the Kizumizu train (that’s what I’m calling it) with mostly everyone else. Finally getting to hear from Kizuki about why he left absolutely wrenches the heart. Not because he was a coward, but because his own outlook on love feels so skewed. Believing that he was letting Mizuho down by not forcing himself to keep swimming after his injury is a clear sign that love, for him, was kind of one-sided.

I don’t mean that in the way that he was selfish, only thinking about himself. He believed he would be a disappointment to her if he gave up. So… he left. Probably believing he was sparing her from being disappointed without even realizing until it was too late that he shattered her completely.

Talking through all this with Airu, now he needs to have that chance to tell Mizuho. And she needs to listen. Because the train is rolling now, and I’m not getting off of it.

Honestly, both of these last two episodes were incredibly satisfying. Despite wanting to slap Shugo for being such a jerk, I really felt like we got more insight. There were missing pieces we needed as viewers to see the vision clearly, and I’m glad we finally got to. For me, that made both episodes feel fulfilling. That’s enough to earn them a combined 10/10.

I’m really excited to see how the rest of Season 2 plays out. I’m actually wondering if this could be the final season, or if there will be far more story to be told beyond this tangled love affair getting worked out.
